Our pets make a house (or apartment) a home. They also make a home dirtier and furrier, and they tend to eat, lick, and lie on everything. So it’s important to stock up on non-toxic cleaning products for pets that are compatible with their habits.
Finding that sweet spot of products that are both non-toxic (ideally with some natural ingredients) and truly effective as only a pet parent understands can involve a lot of trial and error. We’ve done the homework (literally) to create this list of non-toxic cleaners that will tackle those messes while also keeping your pet safe.
Best Non-Toxic Cleaning Products for Pets
We’ve broken this list out into categories so you can find what you need more easily, from floor cleaners for pets to all-purpose cleaners to the best non-toxic laundry detergent for all your pet’s accessories (and your own dog-walking clothes).
Best Non-Toxic Floor Cleaners for Pets
This formula is plant-based and safe for all hard floors. It’s gentle on skin and paws, and safe enough to withstand all the licking and crumb cleanup that happens in a pet-friendly home.
This pet-safe cleaning product breaks down dirt, grime, and grease without harmful chemicals and toxins like sulfates and bleach. The herbal mint scent is particularly effective at masking odor and giving the air a fresh scent in addition to cleaning. If you don’t like fragrances, however, go for a milder or unscented version.
Best Non-Toxic Carpet Cleaners for Pets
Another one from the Puracy family of products, because they get it right and smell good doing it. Use this pet-safe shampoo on carpets, furniture—anything your dog can and will pee on.
Hit that stain with this non-toxic, all-natural cleaner. No need to scrub, soak, or rinse. Use it to spot-treat carpet, furniture, or concrete. Bonus points: The container is recyclable.
Best Non-Toxic All-Purpose Cleaning Products for Pets
Dr. Bronner’s is practically a household name with its line of all-natural, concentrated soaps lining showers across the country. While you shouldn’t wash your body with this biodegradable cleaner, you can bet it’s just as natural and just as effective in scrubbing pet stains right out. Made from plants and essential oils, this natural formula is highly concentrated; use only a couple of drops in warm water to create a hard-working cleaner for pet stains.
Bac-Out is a popular enzyme-based cleaner that kicks bad smells to the curb. With no toxins or additives, this cleaner won’t negatively impact rivers, streams, or oceans if it goes down your drain. It’s also a fantastic laundry addition—simply splash some in with your regular detergent to get things extra clean.
Angry Orange was originally formulated for commercial farms so it has some tried and true experience with serious animal stains and smells. Derived from orange peel oil, a natural disinfectant, it’s non-toxic and pet-safe. This is perhaps the most versatile of pet stain and odor cleaners since you can add it to cat litter, sprinkle it on your lawn, or dilute it as a spray for any surface in your home.
A good go-to spray for stains and odors, this no-mix cleaner is non-toxic and biodegradable, so you can feel good about using it on your furniture, clothes, rugs and other porous surfaces.
Use this pet stain remover on pretty much any surface in your house. It’s another enzyme-based cleaner that’s safe for your pets and easy on the environment. Just spray and scrub to remove stains and odor. What’s more—this company donates 10% of its profits to animal shelters.
Another cleaning product from the Better Life company, this unscented, all-purpose cleaner can be applied to both hard surfaces and soft upholstery. It’s derived entirely from plants (corn and coconut oil and soap bark make up the majority of the ingredient list), making it safe for kids and pets. Just spray it on and wipe down with a towel, and you’re good to go!
This cleaner from Rocco & Roxie is formulated specifically for those smelly pet stains and usable on all kinds of surfaces. It harnesses the power of enzymes to eat away at bacteria and odor particles, eliminating them. It’s chlorine-free and color-safe, making this cleaner safe for people, pets, and everything else. The company is pretty confident in their product, too—they’ll give you a full refund if you’re not satisfied.
Along with baking soda (above) vinegar is a classic non-toxic cleaning product that effectively cleans up a whole host of pet messes. Use it alone or combine with baking soda and lemon for a fizzy, citrusy, all-natural scrub.
Baking soda not only possesses natural great odor absorption powers, but it also makes a great stain remover and general cleaner. Combine it with water to make a paste, or vinegar for extra fizzy cleaning power. Caution: don’t let your dog eat straight baking soda. It’s not toxic but can cause stomach upset.
This pet-safe cleaner works on multiple surfaces (glass, stainless steel, floors, countertops, etc.) and cuts through grease, grime, nose prints, wet food residue, and whatever other unwanted textures pets might leave. Plus, it smells mighty nice.
Best Non-Toxic Laundry Cleaners for Pets
For washing pet beds, blankets, harnesses, clothes, and more, you’ll want a non-toxic cleaner that’s good for the environment and for your pet. Seventh Generation is a trusted “green” cleaning brand, and the company’s laundry detergent, as with their other products, is free of potentially harmful chemicals and additives.
If your dog sheds, these natural dryer sheets might be a good idea to keep you and your dog static-free. Typically, commercial dryer sheets are packed with chemicals you don’t want to transfer to your dog’s skin (or your own nose), but these unbleached and unscented paper sheets fight fuzz and static without the toxins.
